A little magic was all that was needed to give Washington second graders an opportunity to attend a performance of “The Magic School Bus: Lost in the Solar System” at the Marriott-Lincolnshire.

The magic came in the form of a $500 donation from the Alpha Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG) Illinois. The organization’s donation, along with PTO funds and Washington building funds, will allow for a field trip that might otherwise have not been possible.

Alpha Nu picked Washington Elementary as one of two schools in Lake County to receive funding. Chapter President Jan Ellen Shawgo and Finance Chair Dale List said they prefer supporting schools with programs that directly benefit students. List, a retired teacher, said it is such a good experience for children to see live entertainment.

Washington Elementary Principal Gabrielle Devlin said she saw great value in the Marriott performance but wasn’t going to offer the field trip unless it was available to all second graders.

“We wanted to put the money into something we value - that’s why we chose the Marriott-Lincolnshire show,” Devlin said.

The students will attend the performance of “The Magic School Bus” on Friday, March 21.

Alpha Nu is a chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society for Key Women Educators in Illinois. The international organization promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.
