The eighth-graders in Nicholas Gaona’s class at Carl Sandburg Middle School may not be able to train a police dog. But they’re awesome at naming them.
Students submitted the winning name, “Ranger,” in a Mundelein Police Department contest this year to name the newest member of its K-9 team. For its reward, the class received a pizza party and a visit from Ranger and his handler, MPD Officer Kevin Freese on Nov. 17.
According to the Mundelein Insider, Ranger is a carefully selected German Shepherd dog who underwent extensive training in areas such as narcotics detection, tracking, article search, area search, building search and handler protection. The dog will live with Officer Freese and his wife and son
